Mother’s Comfort Project

Check back again soon for the next time we sew beds for NYC animal shelters. Get the details.

About Mother's Comfort
Over 4,000 beds and 3,000 toys have been made and brought to Animal Care and Control through the Mother's Comfort Project, an advocacy project that engages the public by bringing in volunteers and young student clubs to sew cage comforters and by bringing attention to the AC&C shelters and the plight of animal homelessness in NYC.

PHOTOS OF OUR LAST BED DELIVERY, DECEMBER 4TH:

New York City’s municipal shelters are harsh.  Dogs, cats and other animals are housed in small cages and bedding often consists of towels. Through the Mother’s Comfort

Project, Rational Animal provides comfy homemade beds for animals to curl-up in and muffle the noise. The comforters provide a soft place for a homeless animal to sleep -- with a touch of love from the generous people who sew them. There are thousands of animals in NYC's shelters, and they are always in need of some comfort.
We also make catnip toys adorned with orange Animal Guardian ribbons.
We want to make this year a little warmer for all of them.  Join us next time or see below for other ways to help out!
  • Donate to Rational Animal at www.rational-animal.org/get-involved/donate
  • Provide transportation - we need a van per sewing event from Chelsea to Park Slope and back; for bed delivery to an AC&C shelter, from Chelsea to one of the three shelters (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island)
  • Donate fabric/batting (bed stuffing) - contact maggie@rational-animal.org
  • Be a Sponsor - your company or brand can sponsor this project, giving you added exposure through our press releases and both web and social media pages. Plus you'll be helping immensely to make unlucky animals in our shelters feel warm and loved.
  • Become a project manager for sewing and delivery events.  We need help getting the word out about the sewing events and getting funding and transportation for deliveries.
  • Be our videographer! (with or without your own vid cam).  Come film our next sewing event or delivery for a new promo video we're working on.  Contact courtney@rational-animal.org
The Mother’s Comfort Project was created as a tribute to the late Fannie Shapiro, an animal lover and grandmother of Rational Animal founder Susan Brandt.  Her picture with a Baltimore Oriole is MCP’s symbol.

Read this testimonial about our bed sewing project for NYC city shelter animals. Here's our April 3, 2010 sewing team with Ambassador Sadie Blackstar in the 72 beds and 102 cat toys we made!
We are currently in need of a sponsor to fund the 2011 events at HomeEc, Brooklyn.  We must pay for the studio, transportation, storage, batting, plus light refreshments for the volunteers who come out to sew beds.  Contact sbrandt@rational-animal.org if you would like to help or sponsor.
