About Us

Rational Animal

Rational Animal creates media and special events to increase public awareness about NYC’s at-risk animals. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit working to improve the lives of homeless animals, working animals, and wildlife by using media to communicate the actions people can take to help animals and prevent harm to them.

We work with media professionals and companies, celebrities and artists to create original, entertaining and informative materials for broadcast in New York City and communities nationwide.  We also help raise money for rescues and shelters so they can carry out their vital work of caring for needy animals.

Founder Susan Brandt created Rational Animal in 2002.  She believed that with so many animals’ lives at risk due to the actions of humans either intentionally or not, providing more humane education to the public and in schools will lead to better lives for more animals in the future.

Rational Animal is driven by a core of professionals, including writers, artists, musicians, graphic designers, filmmakers, photographers and editors – all animal lovers who donate their time and skills toward media campaigns and special projects focused on public awareness.

Susan Brandt, Founder & Executive Director

Susan Brandt founded Rational Animal in 2002 with the goal of increasing media that
reaches people with important messages about taking action to help animals whose lives are in jeopardy.  Her motivation began as a child as she became exposed to the plight of animals in her community and around the world.  She learned from her mother and grandmother, who rescued and nurtured the animals around them, and her father, a Brooklyn native, who brought the family to live in Boulder, Colorado, and taught her about the beauty of nature.

Susan has developed her skills in creating television and video for animal welfare over the past 20 years.  She attend University of California, Santa Cruz and received a full scholarship for her Master of Arts degree in 1991 from the School of International Studies Communication and Development Program at Ohio University.  She received a Houk grant for her 1992 internship at the Division for the Advancement of Women at the United Nations in Vienna.  Post graduation, she worked at the University of Washington’s Communications and Technology Department where she headed programming and creative development of several innovative, educational television channels, which earned her an award for Excellence in Programming from the Alliance for Community Media.  She also co-hosted an award-winning TV series about the Internet.

In 1998, Susan received a Star Award from her alma mater, Virginia Commonwealth University, for her achievements made post-graduation.

Susan attributes the success of Rational Animal to the dedicated work of the artistic and motivated people who understand the importance of community outreach to improve animals’ lives.
